The Campaign for Pubs has renewed its call for a reduction in VAT for pubs and the wider hospitality sector, urging the public to support a national campaign aimed at easing financial pressure on businesses across the UK.
The campaign argues that many European countries already apply reduced VAT rates to hospitality, helping pubs, restaurants and cafés remain competitive. Supporters believe introducing a similar approach in the UK would provide much-needed relief to businesses facing rising operating costs.
As part of the campaign, members of the public are being encouraged to take two simple actions:
- Contact their local MP to ask them to support a reduction in VAT for pubs and hospitality.
- Sign the “VAT’s The Problem” petition, led by celebrity chef Tom Kerridge, calling on the Government to review the current VAT rate for the sector.
Campaign organisers say that lower VAT could help businesses invest in staff, keep prices affordable for customers and improve the long-term sustainability of Britain’s pubs.
The initiative forms part of the wider #HospitalityUnited and #SaveOurPubs campaigns, which continue to highlight the financial challenges facing the hospitality industry.
Whether the Government will consider changes to VAT remains to be seen, but campaigners are encouraging anyone who supports the UK’s pub trade to make their voice heard.
What do you think?
Would a lower VAT rate help save more British pubs, or are other measures needed to support the hospitality industry? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
