JD Wetherspoon heads to Scotland’s oldest university town with major new student pub partnership
Pub giant JD Wetherspoon is set to open a brand-new pub inside the University of St Andrews Students’ Association building later this year following a new partnership agreement between the two organisations.
The new venue is scheduled to officially open on Friday 4 September 2026 and will be located on St Mary’s Place in the centre of St Andrews, one of Scotland’s most famous university towns.
The pub will occupy the current ground floor bar space within the Students’ Association building and will feature its own dedicated entrance.
Full Refurbishment Planned Before September Opening
A major refurbishment project is already underway ahead of students returning for the new academic year.
Plans include a complete interior transformation with new lighting, flooring, artwork, furniture, fixtures and fittings throughout the venue.
The project will also include the installation of a brand-new bar layout and upgraded drinks dispense system, allowing for an expanded drinks range alongside new kitchen equipment.
Once complete, the venue will serve the full JD Wetherspoon food menu and drinks offering at the chain’s well-known affordable prices.
Importantly, the pub will not be exclusive to students and will remain open to both students and the general public throughout the year.
Students to Choose the Pub Name
In a move designed to reflect the university’s history and local identity, students themselves will help decide the name of the new pub.
Students will submit suggested names connected to the area’s heritage before a final decision is made.
The Students’ Association will continue to own and operate the venue, with staff remaining employed and managed directly by the Association.
The partnership will however allow the organisation to benefit from JD Wetherspoon’s established operating model and buying power used across hundreds of pubs throughout the UK.
“A Positive Step Forward for Students”
Robert “RoMo” Moran, President of Student Opportunities at the University of St Andrews Students’ Association, welcomed the announcement.

He added:
“A partnership with JD Wetherspoon is a positive step forward for students in St Andrews, bringing new opportunities, increased employment, and better value food and drink.
“It supports our ambition to make this space a true hub of student life — relevant, vibrant, and shaped by the needs of today’s students.
“We’re especially excited that students will help decide what the pub is called, as we work together to create a welcoming, inclusive, and student-led space for all.”
Wetherspoon Welcomes St Andrews Expansion
Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson also praised the new partnership.
“We are delighted that a Wetherspoon pub is to open at University of St Andrews and believe it will be a great asset for the students’ social life.”
The opening marks another significant expansion for the pub operator in Scotland and is likely to generate strong interest among both students and locals ahead of the September launch.
Conclusion
The arrival of JD Wetherspoon in St Andrews is expected to reshape the town’s student pub scene, combining the Students’ Association’s community role with one of the UK’s biggest pub operators.
With refurbishment work now underway and students set to help name the venue, anticipation is already building ahead of the official opening later this year.
