A man who killed a father-of-two with a single punch outside a The Picture House pub has been jailed for 10 years and six months.
Kyle O’Callaghan, 30, of no fixed address, was sentenced after admitting the manslaughter of Marcus Carpenter, 37, following a violent altercation outside the town-centre pub in Ebbw Vale.
Mr Carpenter died in hospital four days after suffering catastrophic head injuries in the attack.
The case has shocked the local community and serves as another stark reminder of how a single act of violence can devastate an entire family.
A Night Out That Ended in Tragedy
The incident took place in February outside The Picture House, a popular JD Wetherspoon venue in the heart of the town.
Cardiff Crown Court heard that O’Callaghan struck Mr Carpenter with such force that his head “snapped backwards”, causing him to collapse onto the pavement.
After delivering the punch, O’Callaghan dragged Mr Carpenter’s body along the street before fleeing the scene.
Emergency services attended, and Mr Carpenter was taken to hospital, but despite doctors’ efforts, he died four days later.

Victim Remembered as a “Kind and Gentle” Father
Marcus Carpenter was described in court as a devoted father and a much-loved member of his family.
Relatives said he was a “kind and gentle soul” whose death has left an enormous void in the lives of those who knew him.
His family spoke of their heartbreak and the lasting pain caused by a completely avoidable act of violence.
Judge Condemns the “Fatal and Sickening” Blow
During sentencing, the judge described the attack as a “fatal and sickening punch”.
The court heard that O’Callaghan had a lengthy criminal record, including previous convictions for violent offences.
Although he pleaded guilty to manslaughter, the sentence reflects the severity of the consequences of what prosecutors described as an unprovoked and devastating assault.
The Dangers of One-Punch Violence
Cases like this highlight the deadly consequences of so-called “one-punch” attacks.
What may last only a few seconds can lead to irreversible injuries, loss of life and years of suffering for families and friends.
Police and campaigners have repeatedly warned that a single punch, particularly when a victim falls and strikes their head, can be just as lethal as a weapon.
Community Left in Mourning
The tragedy has deeply affected the community in Ebbw Vale, where Mr Carpenter was well known.
For many, the case is a sobering reminder that nights out should end with memories, not mourning.
At Pub Social, we celebrate the positive role pubs play in bringing people together. Incidents like this are rare, but they underline the importance of respect, responsible drinking and looking after one another.
A Family Changed Forever
No prison sentence can undo the loss suffered by Marcus Carpenter’s loved ones.
A father has lost his life, children have lost their dad, and a family has been left to rebuild after a senseless act of violence.
What began as a night out ended in tragedy — and a reminder that one punch can change everything.
