Does Advertising as LGBTQ+ Friendly Raise an Interesting Question for Pubs?

Across the UK, more pubs are adding phrases such as “LGBTQ+ Friendly”, “Proud to Welcome Everyone”, or similar messages to their websites, social media pages and marketing materials.

For many customers, these signs are reassuring. They make it clear that everyone is welcome and help people choose venues where they feel comfortable and respected.

However, the growing trend also raises an interesting question.

If a pub has always welcomed everyone, does adding an “LGBTQ+ Friendly” label simply make that message more visible, or does it lead some people to wonder whether the venue wasn’t seen that way before?

There are different views.

Some believe the label is important because it removes uncertainty and sends a clear message of inclusion. Others argue that every pub should already be welcoming to all customers regardless of their background or sexuality, making additional labels unnecessary.

For some operators, the decision is also commercial. Clear messaging may help customers identify venues that reflect their values or make them feel more comfortable visiting for the first time.

Ultimately, there is no single answer. Every pub owner chooses how they present their business and the community they want to build.

At Pub Social, we’re interested in hearing from the people who matter most—the pub industry and its customers.

What do you think?

  • If a pub advertises itself as LGBTQ+ friendly, does that simply make its welcome more visible?
  • Or does it unintentionally make people wonder whether that welcome wasn’t obvious before?
  • Should every pub promote itself this way, or is it enough to assume that everyone is welcome unless stated otherwise?
